The Villages is a large residential community the covers parts of Lake, Sumpter and Marion Counties ​in central Florida. There are 36 golf courses and thousands of residential lots.  

The property is located on the Mid Florida Ridge and most of the storm water ponds have to be lined to keep the water from seeping through the sandy soils. Since many of the ponds are located around golf courses or other amenities, the owners and managers have included seasonal flowers in the plant palette on the floating wetlands.  

The islands are harvested and replanted quarterly, maintaining seasonal color and effectively removing nitrogen and phosphorus stored in the plants.
